Senator Schmitt Calls For Confirmation of U.S. Ambassador to the Holy See, Democrats Block Nomination
Schmitt is the First Catholic Republican Elected to the Senate from Missouri
WASHINGTON – Today, Senator Eric Schmitt (R-MO), the first Catholic Republican elected to the United States Senate by the state of Missouri, called for President Trump’s nominee for U.S. Ambassador to the Holy See Brian Burch to be confirmed by unanimous consent. Senate Democrats blocked Senator Schmitt’s effort on the floor.
“With the election of Pope Leo XIV last week, the first American born pope in the history of the Catholic Church, we have a unique opportunity to help develop relationships with the Vatican like never before. Deepening the faith of Americans and Catholics across the globe with the election of a new pontiff, Ambassador Burch can help lead U.S. diplomacy to Pope Leo XIV’s new administration. It’s a shame Senate Democrats blocked Mr. Burch’s nomination and are standing in the way of strengthening the United States’ relationship with the Vatican,” said Senator Eric Schmitt.
