Senator Schmitt Discusses Big Beautiful Bill, on Fox Business’ Mornings with Maria
WASHINGTON – Senator Schmitt earlier today appeared on Mornings with Maria to discuss President Trump’s Big Beautiful Bill making its way through the House and Senate:
Watch the full interview HERE.
Senator Schmitt on Reducing Government Spending:
“I will tell you, one of the things a big number of Senators are concerned about are spending reforms. We went from spending $4 trillion to over $7 trillion, we take in $5 trillion now. This may be the only time…the only time we can really address this because we only need 51 votes in the Senate. Normally, it takes 60, and you have to start trying to find Democratic votes to get to 60, and usually that means spending more money. So I think fiscal discipline is the call of the day over here in the Senate. But we want to work with the House, and we’ll see what they come up with on this SALT issue.”
Senator Schmitt on Balancing the Budget:
“I think the best way to look at this is, if you just get to pre-pandemic spending levels, Maria, which was around $4 plus trillion, and you add population growth and you add inflation, that gets you to a number that’s less than what we’re spending now, significantly less. And if you can hold the line on that spending for just a few years, I think we can deliver a balanced budget for President Trump. President Trump talked about that in his State of the Union. I think we can get to a balanced budget in a few years if we are disciplined here. And there’s no reason in the world why we can’t do it. It’s irresponsible for us to continue to spend $2 trillion every year we don’t have. And as you noted, we now spend $1 trillion on the interest of that debt, which is more than what we spend on our military. So, something’s got to change, and our point of view here, I think is, we only need 51 votes. If Republicans can stick together in the Senate, we can do all those things. But this process is obviously very important, it’s starting to come to a head now, as you see the work in the House. It’ll come over to the Senate, and I’m hopeful we’re going to get something done here.”
Senator Schmitt on Obstructionist Democrats:
“This is an NGO network that moves in many instances, some of the same people around from place to place across the country. The same groups that dropped off bricks for protests that turned into riots in the summer of 2020, are some of the same groups that are at play here. So, we’ve a job to do and we’re going to be very focused on that. We interact with our constituents, I know I do, every single week and we definitely want to hear what they have to say. But these professional protesters which is essentially what this is, it’s sort of old news now, we’ll continue to deal with it…The Democrats have no message. I don’t think they’ve hit rock bottom yet…They’re total obstructionists at this point, they’ve got nothing to run on, they have no leader. But meanwhile, we’re going to do our job, we’re going to deliver for the American people.”
Senator Schmitt on Securing the Southern Border Under President Trump:
“It turns out we didn’t need any new laws; we didn’t need any new exceptions. We just needed a President to enforce the laws that we have. And I was saying that all along, when we were having these debates the last couple of years…the human cost of $100 million a week for just the human trafficking, not even the drug trafficking that was flowing across our border. They threw the borders open, this mass migration that the Democrats signed onto has been a disaster for our country. And within 120 days, President Trump has essentially sealed that border, and that’s what the American people voted for. He has delivered on it.”
