Senator Eric Schmitt Calls for Investigation, Demands Answers from Biden Admin. on Chinese Spy Balloon

WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Senator Eric Schmitt sent a letter to Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin III demanding answers in regard to the Chinese spy balloon currently flying in the United States and most recently in Missouri airspace.

“The fact that a Chinese spy balloon is able to fly in American airspace completely undeterred is absolutely ridiculous. The Biden Administration needs to answer why this Chinese spy balloon was not taken down over a sparsely populated areabefore it moved deep into the United States interior, or why they continue to allow it to fly,” said Senator Eric Schmitt. “It would be naïve not to think China is attempting to observe critical military installations across the country and in Missouri, such as Whiteman Air Force base – a vital asset in ensuring America’s nuclear preparedness and home to the B-2 Spirit stealth bomber. We need answers from President Biden, Secretary Austin, and this administration immediately.”

Background:

  • Missouri is home to Whiteman Air Force base, home of the B2 Spirit Stealth Bomber.
    • Whiteman Air Force base is also home to the 509th Bomb Wing of the Air Force Global Strike Command, a vital asset in maintaining the United States nuclear preparedness.
    • The 509th Bomb Wing’s mission is to “execute strategic nuclear operations, lethal global strike and combat support – anytime, anywhere.”
  • Fort Leonard Wood is also in the state of Missouri, and is the primary American training school specializing in military Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (CBRN) defense, and is vital to American security.
