Senator Schmitt Cosponsors Sen. Paul’s REINS Act

This bill aims to restrain the power of a bloated bureaucracy and is yet another action by Senator Schmitt in his fight to dismantle the administrative state

WASHINGTON – Today, Senator Eric Schmitt cosponsored Senator Rand Paul’s (R-KY) in Regulations from the Executive in Need of Scrutiny (REINS) Act.

“The REINS Act is a vital step in stopping unelected bureaucrats from skirting Congress and issuing costly new rules to the detriment of Americans. Requiring congressional approval for major rules, guidance, and other executive actions is a vital check on an administrative state that has amassed far too much power. I’m proud to cosponsor the REINS Act and will continue to fight to dismantle the administrative state,” said Senator Eric Schmitt.

Background:

  • The Regulations from the Executive in Need of Scrutiny (REINS) Act would broaden the Congressional Review Act to require congressional approval of major rules, guidance, and other executive actions – those with an annual price tag of $100 million or more – before federal agencies could implement them.
  • Congress is constitutionally required to decide major questions of nationwide policy. The REINS Act would require congress approve costly executive actions before they go into effect.
  • The REINS Act is much like Senator Schmitt’s Expediting Reform And Stopping Excess Regulations (ERASER) Act that was introduced last week as it works to claw power away from the administrative state.
