Senator Schmitt Applauds Deployment of $40.5 Million for Coldwater Creek Cleanup

WASHINGTON — Today, U.S. Senator Eric Schmitt (R-MO) announced the deployment of $40.5 million by the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers to cleanup radiation waste in Coldwater Creek and related sites across the St. Louis region. This funding will be used for remediation activities under the Formerly Utilized Sites Remedial Action Program (FUSRAP) to clean up radiation waste related to the Manhattan Project and protect the health and well-being of impacted communities.

“Protecting the health and well-being of our communities that are impacted by radiation waste will always be a top priority. As a longtime advocate for radiation cleanup, this funding is great news for communities around Coldwater Creek and will allow the Army Corp of Engineers to accelerate their critical work protecting the health and well-being of those impacted by Manhattan Project nuclear waste,” said Senator Schmitt.

Background:

  • Senator Schmitt co-sponsored and voted for the expanded Radiation Exposure Compensation Act (RECA), which was signed into law by President Trump as part of the One Big Beautiful Bill.
  • Senator Schmitt spoke on the Senate floor in support of RECA to compensate those impacted by Manhattan Project nuclear waste.
  • After decades of delays and broken promises, the Trump Administration has taken swift action to speed up remediation of radioactive waste in St. Louis. Now, the projected cleanup timeline for Westlake Landfill has been cut by nearly two years and cleanup operations along Coldwater Creek have been expanded with the boosted resources announced today.
